CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Aug. 1, 2024 – Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø) recently teamed up with 12 businesses in Ann Arbor and Saline to present Shop Local, Bank Local events this summer. This initiative was created to give back to ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø’s neighbors and introduce the credit union to the community. While ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø has served members for 70 years, they recently opened two branches in Washtenaw County in Ann Arbor and Saline.
Small businesses are the backbone of our communities, with 68 cents out of every dollar spent staying in the local community, compared to 30 to 40 cents per dollar for national retailers. ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø selected the partner businesses to encourage local shopping and support its neighbors. Community members were invited to attend the events, where they could shop at participating local retailers and play a fun ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø spin-to-win game for the chance to receive a variety of prizes. Each event featured over $2,000 in prizes, including gift cards purchased by ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø from local businesses, deposits into savings or checking accounts, and ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø swag.
To support financial wellness for the community, ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø awarded multiple Certificates of Deposit during the events. Two CDs were also awarded as grand prizes at its Ann Arbor and Saline branch offices. Winners chose their term, allowing them to see first-hand how compounding CD interest can help them save for their goals.
“Shop Local, Bank Local featured prizes and special loan and CD offers that reflect ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø’s mission to promote financial success for our members and communities,” said Steve Brewer, ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø President/CEO. “This program was a unique way to invest locally and partner with municipalities and businesses to support sustainable communities.”
The credit union partnered with the following Ann Arbor and Saline businesses to present Shop Local, Bank Local events. Gift cards from these businesses were also featured as prizes to encourage local spending.
